DME is ether represented by the chemical formula CH₃-O-CH₃, which is a very clean and easy-to-handle fuel that can be synthesized by using natural gas as a base material. It has very low toxicity and can be used to produce aerosol spray (high class cosmetic spray and others) as an alternative to chlorofluorocarbon (CFC). It is easily liquefied under a pressure of more than 6Pa or a low temperature of less than -25°C so that it is easy to handle with various features as follows:

• With physical characteristics extremely close to LPG, the existing infrastructure for handling LPG, such as tankers and storage/dispensing facilities can be utilized with slight modification.
• It is a clean fuel and environmentally benign with no sulfur or other odors.
• From an economics point of view, it can be applied for the development and commercialization of a medium to small-scale gas field.

JGC has established Japan DME Ltd. jointly with Mitsubishi Gas Chemical Company Inc., ITOCHU Corporation, and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. Currently consideration is being given to commencing an operation in the western part of Australia to achieve early production of DME.
