The effective use and development of new sources of energy are important goals in Japan. Since Japan is lacking in energy resources, nuclear power has come to be regarded as the main alternative energy resource for fossil fuels. Currently, approximately 30% of the total electricity consumed in Japan is supplied by nuclear power. In order to make maximum use of nuclear power, it is vital to continuously improve power reactors and establish the nuclear fuel cycle and radioactive waste management systems. JGC contributes to the nuclear power utilization in Japan through the design and construction of spent nuclear fuel reprocessing plants, radioactive waste treatment facilities, and radioactive waste disposal facilities. In addition, JGC is vigorously refining its technology by conducting research and development of radioactive waste treatment and disposal technologies at its research laboratory in Oarai, in Ibaraki, Japan. |
