GTL is a technology to produce petroleum products, such as naphtha, gas
oil, kerosene and wax, from natural gas. Compared to production from crude
oil, it has less nitrogen oxide (NOx) and sulfur oxide (SOx) so that clean
petroleum products can be produced. The biggest advantage of using the
GTL process is that it is easier to store and transport these finished
products compared to natural gas and LNG, and they can be handled in the
same way as normally refined petroleum products. JGC constructed the world's
first commercial GTL plant for Shell MDS in 1993 in Bintulu, Malaysia,
and has been working with Shell to provide the basic design for the next
generation large scale GTL plant that is proposed to be implemented at
four selected locations around the world.
