Most Plant designed/constructed by JGC is a complex where various technologies including civil engineering, construction engineering, machinery, control systems, and electricity generation are combined. In order to estimate the construction cost it requires a unique and complicated method different from cost estimating for the civil engineering and construction of ordinary buildings. In addition, it is made more complicated because there is a need to consider the regional/economical situation at the construction site as well as the environmental conditions and the terrestrial/atmospheric conditions. For instance, when a gas process plant is to be constructed in the middle of the Sahara desert the cost estimating system for general building construction cannot be applied. JGC has established a unique method to estimate such high-level plant construction with complex factors correctly based on long-term experience. JGC has also systemized the database software into the Construction Cost estimation System (COCOS). COCOS can instantaneously process an enormous amount of data - from the amount of construction work estimated by our Design Department to the regional information required to carry out the construction work - in order to attain a highly reliable construction cost estimate. |

Cost control is an important function to ensure a successful project, just as much as technology, manpower, and machinery. In order to complete a project successfully, it is a must to monitor the status of incurred cost, and grasp the trending this indicates to arrive at an estimated cost at completion at an early stage. However, traditionally there have been many difficulties in the way of grasping the correct status of incurred cost generated by the construction work, all the more so when work was being performed at remote construction sites. To solve this problem, JGC has developed and uses the Site Cost Control System (ProSCATE) at construction sites. It records the status of costs being incurred at the site correctly and in real-time so that the administrator on-site can make a timely forecast based on the recorded data. It enables the estimation of the correct construction cost for completion of the project. It also enables the Yokohama Head Office to estimate the total cost for the project instantaneously by accessing the ProSCATE data through modern communication systems. ProSCATE greatly contributes to project management by achieving healthy cost management. |
